چکیده

Using a toy model Lagrangian we investigate the formation of vortices in first order phase transitions. The evolution and interactions of vacuum bubbles are also studied using both analytical approximations and a numerical simulation of scalar field dynamics. A long lived bubble wall bound state is discovered and its existence is justified by using a simplified potential for the bubble wall interaction. The conditions that need to be satisfied for vortex formation by bubble collisions are also studied with particular emphasis placed on geometrical considerations. These conditions are then implemented in a Monte Carlo simulation for the study of the probability of defect formation. It is shown that the probability of vortex formation by collision of relativistically expanding bubbles gets reduced by about 10% due to the above mentioned geometric effects. Structure formation, phase transitions and drag interactions in multicomponent su- perconductors and superfluids

Superconductivity and superfluidity are some of the most fundamental and important phenomena of modern physics. However, much theoretical work for such systems so far has been restricted to the onecomponent case. For multicomponent systems, the spectrum of possible topological defects, their structure formation and associated phase transitions, can all be much richer than in the one-component c...

Z 2 Monopoles , Vortices , and The Deconfinement Transition in Mixed Action SU ( 2 ) Gauge Theory

Adding separate chemical potentials λ and γ for Z2-monopoles and vortices respectively in the Villain form of the mixed fundamental-adjoint action for the SU(2) lattice gauge theory, we investigate their role in the interplay between the deconfinement and bulk phase transitions using Monte Carlo techniques. Setting λ to be nonzero, we find that the line of deconfinement transitions is shifted i...

SUPERFLUID He: A LABORATORY MODEL SYSTEM FOR QUANTUM FIELD THEORY∗

The early Universe is believed to have undergone a sequence of rapid phase transitions. Defect formation in these transitions has been suggested as one possible source for the anisotropy in the cosmic background radiation and the large-scale structure in the distribution of visible mass. So far controlled laboratory experiments have not been performed on homogeneous second order phase transitio...

Topological Defects from First Order Gauge Theory Phase Transitions

We investigate the mechanism by which topological defects form in first order phase transitions with a charged order parameter. We show how thick superconductor vortices and heavy cosmic strings form by trapping of magnetic flux. In an external magnetic field, intermediate objects such as strips and membranes of magnetic flux and chains of single winding defects are produced. At non-zero temper...

How does the geodesic rule really work for global symmetry breaking first order phase transitions?

According to the current models in particle physics, symmetry breaking phase transitions are expected to have occurred in the early stages of the evolution of the universe. There are two mechanisms by which these transitions may have taken place: either by the formation of bubbles of the new phase within the old one (i.e., first order phase transition), or by spinodal decomposition (i.e., secon...
